Welcome to my website!

Howdy! I'm Caroline Petronis, a fourth-year sociology/science studies PhD student at UCSD. I'm broadly interested in examining the enmeshing of the online, the offline, and technology to better understand the circulation of information and shifts in scientific expertise, especially as we encounter and interact with increasing numbers of more-than-human technological entities (think algorithms).

I'm currently interested in the intersections of artificial intelligence and medical diagnosis.

Right now, I'm working on a project studying the impact of social media on public understandings of diagnostic categories (more specifically the expansion of these categories, negotiations of diagnostic information vs. misinformation, and changing understandings of disease and diagnosis).

In my free time, you can find me watching sports (and losing my voice when overzealously cheering for Duke basketball), going to concerts featuring indie artists that my parents hate, and playing Nancy Drew PC games. Check out my CV here and my (mostly inactive) Twitter (X?) at @CPetroAcademic.
